When My Mind Started Working Better Than I Expected

For years, I had been quietly adjusting my expectations of my own mind. Names disappeared almost as soon as I heard them. I would walk rapidly into a room only to forget why I was there. My memory didn't seem as reliable as it once had, and mental arithmetic? I'd given up on that decades earlier. Why struggle when calculators were so readily available?
I don't think I ever consciously decided, Well, that's it. My brain isn't going to work as well anymore. It was subtler than that. Little by little, I simply stopped expecting certain things from myself. Then something happened that made me question those assumptions.
When Things Began to Change
I had begun working seriously on my cognitive abilities, using a combination of InnerTalk programs for memory, concentration, learning, creativity, and cognitive enhancement, along with programs designed to address stress and create a calmer internal environment. It was my usual “kitchen sink” approach. 😊
That combination eventually became our Maximizing Brain Power album. But what fascinated me wasn't simply that I felt I was doing something positive for my brain. It was the unexpected ways the changes began showing up.
Old memories became easier to access. Sometimes it almost felt as though I could see a memory turning away from me, only to have it turn back and become available again.
Numbers surprised me even more. Instead of laboriously working out a simple calculation, I sometimes began seeing numbers almost as shapes that fit together—and suddenly the answer was simply there.
Then obscure pieces of information started popping into my mind, including facts about football, a subject in which I have absolutely no interest!
These weren't earth-shattering events. But to me, they were wonderful because they represented abilities I had quietly stopped expecting from my mind. And they made me wonder: Had I really lost those abilities—or had I simply stopped expecting them to show up?
What Are You Expecting From Your Mind?
I can't tell you exactly what was happening in my brain, and I don't want to suggest that belief alone can magically give us abilities we don't possess. It can't. But our expectations do matter.
If we repeatedly tell ourselves, I'm terrible with names, I can't remember anything anymore, or I'm too old to learn that, those conclusions can gradually become part of what we expect from ourselves. And expectations can influence what we notice, how much attention we pay, what we attempt, and how quickly we give up.
Belief may not give us an ability we don't possess—but a limiting belief can stop us from fully using an ability we do. That realization changed the way I thought about supporting my own mind.
Supporting Brain Power From More Than One Direction

This is one reason I prefer an album approach for something as complex as cognitive performance. Memory may not be the only issue. Stress can interfere. Concentration may wander. Perhaps we've stopped expecting ourselves to learn easily. Maybe we've decided creativity belongs to other people. Or perhaps we're carrying mental blocks we don't even recognize.
Maximizing Brain Power approaches cognitive performance from several different directions, with programs focused on memory, concentration, cognitive enhancement, accelerated learning, creativity, inner peace, and stress reduction.
Because sometimes the question isn't simply what our mind can do. It may also be what we've stopped asking it to do.

There's More to This Story
My own experience left me with a much bigger question than simply whether my memory had improved: How many conclusions had I made about my mind that I had never thought to question?
That's what I explore more deeply in my full article, How I Regained My Mental Sharpness. I look at the way expectations can gradually become self-fulfilling, the things we casually tell ourselves about our mental abilities, and a simple experiment you can use to begin noticing the assumptions you may have made about your own mind.

“I used your memory recording for two or three weeks and one day it all clicked. Now I’m doing better in my classes and with less study time. I feel more confident about everything.”
